Buying FAQs

When purchasing from Australia-based sellers who do not have a Pro subscription, buyers will pay a fee that is already included in the item price.

The Buyer Protection fee is calculated as:

  • A flat fee of AU $0.30 per item, and

  • 8% of the item price up to AU $20, and

  • 6% of any portion of the item price from AU $20 to AU $500, and

  • 4% of any portion of the item price from AU $500 to AU $5,000

There’s also a cap on the total fee amount that the buyer will pay. Any portion of the item price over AU $5,000 won’t incur any additional fees.

The minimum listing price will continue to be AU $0.99 for fixed price (Buy It Now) listings, and AU $0.01 for Auction listings.

The Buyer Protection fee is mandatory and is applied to all listings* by Australia-based sellers, excluding Pro sellers.

*Excludes Vehicles and Classified Ads.

Easily get in touch with us through our Customer Service page, or by clicking Help on eBay.com.au — we’re here to help. You’ll be able to connect with a real person by chat and email any time of day or night. To make sure you get the right help, an automated assistant will ask a few questions before connecting you with a team member.

You can also talk to eBay Customer Service on the phone during business hours (9am - 6pm AET Monday to Friday).

Our technologies and programs are designed to regularly monitor and flag suspicious activity including potential fraud, and take action to prevent harm before it happens.

We also enforce a comprehensive set of policies designed to create a fair, safe and efficient marketplace for both buyers and sellers. These policies cover various aspects of the customer journey, from listing an item to post-sale obligations.

One of the ways we protect customers is how we manage funds availability. We typically make funds available to sellers registered as individuals only after the order is considered delivered or complete, which is determined by the delivery method. When the seller has met the required criteria, including number of sales and cases, they can receive their funds faster. We may also place a hold on funds in certain circumstances, for example, if there's an open case or dispute on a transaction, if a buyer reports a problem with the order, if the seller's account is flagged as restricted or suspended, or if the seller has a negative account balance.

We’ve still got you covered with secure transactions, thanks to payments that are encrypted end-to-end and handled by our trusted payment partners, whose secure technology processes transactions safely and reliably.

A Pro seller is a seller who has an eBay Pro subscription which gives them access to advanced selling features, including expanded shipping and payout options. These sellers also pay transaction fees (final value fees) when their item sells.

Any seller may choose to subscribe to an eBay Pro plan, but sellers who have sold more than AU $25,000 in the past 12 months are automatically upgraded to a Pro Starter plan in order to sell on eBay.com.au. Learn more about becoming a Pro seller.

Yes, Buyer Protection applies to purchases from Pro sellers on eBay.com.au at no additional cost to you.

Buyer Protection is a program that applies to all purchases on eBay.com.au, and includes 24/7 customer support, risk monitoring and fraud detection, and secure transactions. Additionally, when you buy from an Australia-based seller without a Pro subscription, a Buyer Protection fee is included in the item price.

eBay Money Back Guarantee is an additional protection on your purchase. If an item doesn’t arrive, is faulty or damaged, or doesn’t match the listing description, you can request a refund within 30 days of the delivery date. This protection is free and applies to most items on our site. Learn more about eBay Money Back Guarantee.

Of course! If the item is fully refunded, then the full Buyer Protection fee will also be refunded. If the item is partially refunded, the Buyer Protection fee will be proportionally refunded.

Where applicable, the Buyer Protection fee will always be included in the item price so there are no hidden fees. At checkout, you will see the fee amount underneath the item’s name. Select Buyer Protection to see what protection is included and a detailed breakdown of the price.

Selling FAQs

For sellers without a Pro subscription, while listing, you'll see that a Buyer Protection fee will be added to the listing price. You'll be able to review your listing price, the Buyer Protection fee, and the total item price the buyer will see before completing your listing.

The minimum listing price will continue to be $0.99 for fixed price (Buy It Now) listings, and $0.01 for Auction listings.

The Buyer Protection fee is always inclusive of GST.

The Buyer Protection fee is paid by the buyer to eBay on Australia-based sellers’ listings, excluding listings by Pro sellers. We recently changed our fee structure, so it’s free to sell, meaning there are no barriers for casual sellers to list the items buyers love. For listings by Pro sellers, Buyer Protection is added at no additional cost, since Pro sellers pay transaction fees with each item that sells.

When setting the item price, you’ll see the Buyer Protection fee amount and the total item price that buyers will see on the listing. You can also view the fee amount from your Active listings.

When you set a starting bid, the Buyer Protection fee is added so you can see what the buyer’s minimum bid amount will be. As the Buyer Protection fee is variable, the fee amount that the buyer actually pays is calculated as part of the final auction selling price.

When a buyer sends a counteroffer, you’ll see the buyer’s price breakdown, including the amount you’ll receive and the Buyer Protection fee paid to eBay, so you’ll have all the information you need to accept or decline the counteroffer.

As a Pro seller, who pays transaction fees, Buyer Protection is added at no additional charge to you or your buyers. We’ve kept things simple for you, so there’s nothing you need to enable this protection for your buyers.

With Buyer Protection, your buyers are covered with 24/7 customer support, risk monitoring and fraud detection, and secure transactions.

Once a buyer’s order is confirmed, you can send the item. Your funds will typically be available once the item’s delivered, or shortly after the buyer pays if you’ve met the required criteria. Any applicable selling fees and costs – such as, Promoted Listing fees or shipping label costs – are deducted from your sales proceeds.

Once your funds are available, you can request a payout to your linked bank account. Pro sellers also have the option of scheduled daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly payouts. You can track and manage your payouts from Payments in My eBay or Seller Hub.
