Listing a product with variations in Selling Manager Pro

You can use Selling Manager Pro to list a product and all the variations of it in one multi-quantity, fixed price listing. For example:Use Selling Manager Pro to create a listing for a T-shirt in a variety of colours and sizes.

Make sure you meet the requirements to create a listing with variations.

Currently, most categories within Clothing, Shoes & Accessories and Home & Garden support multi-quantity, fixed price listing.

Creating your product

  1. In Selling Manager Pro, on the Product Inventory page, click the Create Product button.

  2. To create a product with variations, select the Product with variations option.

  3. On the Create Product page enter:

    • The product name (required)

    • A custom label (SKU), if you use one

    • The folder you want to save the product in

    • Optionally, a restock alert and notes to remind you to order more items when they’re close to selling out.

  4. Click the Create variations button to continue. To save as a draft, click the Save for later button.

Creating variations for your product

  1. Select a category, and then click the Continue button.

  2. Define variation details. Specify the areas where your product has differences. Select from the list of details or enter your own variation detail by clicking the Add your own variation detail button.

Example: If you’re selling a product in small, medium and large, click Size and then select S, M, and L .

    • You can select up to 5 variation details. If a detail doesn’t apply to your items, ignore it.

    • When you specify variation details, use common words that buyers will search for, such as sizes and colours. Buyers will use these details to find your items.

    • The first variation you select will be the variation that you’ll display in your pictures. Be sure to choose a variation such as color or sleeve style instead of size or manufacturer.

    • When you’re done with this step, click the Continue button.

  3. Select item specifics from the list. Item specifics are characteristics that apply to all the items in the listing. Brand, Manufacturer, and Style are examples of typical item specifics.

Example: If all the items in your listing are made of cotton, select Material from the drop-down menu, and then click Cotton .

    • The variation details you defined in step 1 do not appear in the item specifics list, and you cannot add them to the list.

Example: If you’ve already selected Colour as a variation detail, you can’t enter it as an item specific.

    • The more item specifics you use, the easier it is for your buyers to find your items.

    • If an item specific you need doesn’t appear in the list you can add it by clicking the Add your own item specific button and entering a unique item specific name (such as Manufacturer or Year) and at least one value (such as Acme or 1998).

    • If an item specific doesn’t apply to your items, ignore it or click the Remove button.

    • When you’re done with this step, click the Continue button.

  4. Create variations. Optionally, enter a unique name, custom label or stock-keeping unit (SKU) to help you keep track of your product.

    • Click Create variations. We’ll automatically create a list of all the possible variations of your items. Edit the list to remove any variations you don’t want until the list includes only the items you’re selling.

    • If needed, add variations to your product by clicking the Add button.

    • You can also create your list of variations manually by entering a name or SKU in the table and then selecting from the drop-down menus until you generate a list of the items you’re selling.

    • When you’re done with this step, click the Save button.

Creating a listing template

After you create your list of all variations in the Create Listings with Variations steps, you are directed to the Product Inventory page in Selling Manager Pro to create your template.

From the Product Inventory page you will:

  • Update the quantity.

  • Enter your average unit cost.

  1. From the list of variations, select the variations you want to include in your template.

  2. Click the Create new template link. You are directed to the create template flow.

  3. Select the category you want to list in. You will only see a selection of categories in which you can create a listing with variations.

  4. Add shared and variation pictures and update quantity and price by clicking the Add pictures, quantity, and price button.

Adding pictures
On the Add pictures page, add your shared pictures and variation pictures. Shared pictures show general views of the items you’re selling. Variation pictures show the differences in the items you’re selling.

Shared pictures show general views of your items. A single shared picture can show your item in several different styles or views. Take advantage of the shared pictures to show:

  • several examples of your variations in one picture, such as all the colours

  • a pair of your items

  • a close-up

  • alternate views

Variation pictures show the differences in the items you’re selling. For variation pictures, use pictures that show your items’ colours or the first variation detail you defined when you created the listing. You don’t have to add pictures for each variation.

  • You can add as many as 12 shared pictures and as many as 12 pictures for each variation. To help you include more pictures, eBay has a special fee structure for pictures in these listings. See eBay fees.

  • You can add pictures that show a different variation detail by clicking the Change variation button. However, when you change variations, you’ll delete all the variation pictures you’ve already added.

  • To see how your pictures will appear to buyers, review the What buyers see section on the right side of the page.

  • When you’re done adding pictures, click the Continue button.

Adding price and quantity

  • From the list of all the variations in the template, enter quantity and price information for each variation. Alternatively, you can select all the variations you want to revise, and then click the Edit Fixed Price button to revise the price of all selected items at once.

  • To see how this listing will appear, click the Preview your listing button.

  • When you are done editing the price and quantity, click the Save button.

Posting and managing your listing

On the Product Inventory page, the new template you created appears under Listing templates. Manage this template the same as you do with other listing templates.

To add or remove variations or make other changes, select the template you want to change, and then click the Edit templates button.

When you want to make changes to the items, do so at the product level first, and not at the individual variation level. For more information, read about creating products and listing templates.

Best practices

Consider listing in only one category.
If you choose to list in two categories, make sure that both categories allow listing with variations.
Make your most popular variations more prominent.
Choose the best way to display your product—the way your buyers want to see your items. In most Clothing, Shoes & Accessories categories, for example, buyers will want to see the various colors, sizes, and styles you’re selling. Be sure to add plenty of pictures. In other categories, however, you might want to show different variations.
Example: You can list cobalt Fiesta dinnerware. Instead of selecting color as a variation detail (since they’re all cobalt blue), you enter Place Setting as a variation detail. Under that variation you would specify 4-Piece and 5-Piece. You can also enter Plates as a variation detail, and then specify Dinner and Salad. Experiment with your listings to see which approach helps you sell the most.
Use variation details and item specifics that buyers are likely to search for.
Item specifics can help attract buyers to your listing. Use variation details and item specifics that your buyers are likely to use in their search.
Example: When you specify a colour under Main Colour, choose a common colour name like “red” instead of a unique name like “cranberry.” Use a unique colour name only when you’re certain that buyers will search for it.
For sellers in Clothing, Shoes & Accessories categories: Give your buyers the specific information they need by using dependent tags such as Size Type.
Example: If you sell both misses and petite sizes, make sure your buyers know whether an item is a misses medium or a petite medium.
Make the most of your pictures.
Pictures help buyers decide whether to buy, especially in listings where there is more than one variation of your product. We recommend at least one picture that displays all the variations in the listing.
Consider the duration of your listing and monitor your inventory.
  • Consider using a time frame of Good ‘Til Cancelled for your listings with variations, and keep them listed as long as possible. Popular multi-quantity listings can appear higher in search results, so you’ll reach more buyers.

  • When you sell an item, we’ll automatically deduct the quantity from your quantity and price list for that variation.

  • If you sell out of one item, it will show in your listing as “out of stock” until you replenish it.

  • Use the Inventory Product page in Selling Manager Pro to track your inventory. Check to make sure you don’t sell out of all your variations. If you sell all the variations of the item, the listing will automatically end and you’d need to relist the item to sell more, plus you might lose the search visibility benefits that you earned from the previous listing.
