Selling fees without an eBay Store

When selling on eBay, you'll pay a final value fee for sold items. We won't generally charge a fee to list an item, unless you choose a listing upgrade feature.

Most fees and other selling costs, such as postage labels printed through eBay and refunds to buyers, are deducted from your sales proceeds before your payout is initiated. Learn more about how fees and selling costs are charged.

eBay may apply additional charges in some circumstances based on your selling activity (such as international sales), as well as your seller performance level and service metrics.

The fees on this page apply if you don't have an eBay Store.

Different fees will apply if you have an eBay Store or if you want to sell vehicles. Please see the appropriate page below:

This page was updated on 16 June 2023 to clarify some of our fee terms. Fee amounts have not changed.

Fees when you list your item

It's generally free to list items* in auction-style or fixed price format on eBay.com.au.

When you list your item, you can select features that require an additional fee, but may help your listing stand out and attract more buyers.

If fees apply when listing your item, you'll be able to review these on the listing form before submitting your listing.

*Limits and exclusions apply; please read our Full terms for fees when listing an item section below.

  • All sellers listing on eBay.com.au are entitled to 250,000 free listings per month for items listed in auction-style or fixed price format in most categories, including relisted items and listings that are ended early.
  • An excess listing fee of $1.00 (incl. GST) per listing will apply if you have used up the monthly free listings, or if you list an item in a category that is excluded from free listings (see our category pricing list (PDF) - opens in new window or tab for details of exclusions).
  • All existing selling limits on your account (as well as category and item limits) still apply, and may prevent you from creating the maximum number of listings stated above.
  • If you choose to list your item in two categories, you'll pay a feature fee for listing in the second category per the table above, and any other feature fees will be charged twice (once for each category).
  • Auction-style listings may be automatically relisted up up to eight times if they don't sell. However, any applicable excess listing or feature fees are only charged for the first listing.
  • Fixed price listings are "Good 'Til Cancelled" – they renew automatically once per month unless all of the items sell, you end the listing, or the listing violates an eBay policy. Any applicable excess listing fees or feature fees are only charged for the original listing.
  • Excess listing and feature fees are non-refundable once charged, even if your item doesn't sell or you remove the feature from your listing.

Fees when you sell your item

You pay one final value fee for items you sell on eBay, with no third-party payment processing fees.

The final value fee is calculated as a percentage of the total sale amount per item (item price + postage and handling charges + any applicable taxes), plus a fixed charge per order.

If your item doesn't sell, you usually don't pay a final value fee. However, if we determine that you may have completed a sale outside of eBay, we'll charge a final value fee for introducing you to the buyer.

If you refund a buyer or cancel a sale, you may be eligible for fee credits.

Sellers not meeting performance expectations will be charged higher final value fees:

  • If your seller evaluation on the 20th of a month shows that you are not meeting our minimum performance standards (i.e. 'Below Standard'), you'll be charged an additional 5.5% (incl. GST) on the total sale amount for items sold in all categories during the following calendar month.
  • If your service metrics evaluation on the 20th of a month indicates that your rate of 'Item not as described' returns is Very High in one or more categories compared to your peers, you'll be charged an additional 5.5% (incl. GST) on the total sale amount for items sold in those categories during the following calendar month.

You can review your performance metrics and status at any time in your Seller standards dashboard - opens in new window or tab and Service metrics dashboard - opens in new window or tab.

  • When you sell an item on eBay, the final value fee is calculated as a percentage of the total sale amount per item (item price + postage and handling charges + any applicable taxes), plus a fixed charge of $0.30 (incl. GST) per order.
    • The item price is the winning bid (for auction-style listings), the Buy It Now price (for fixed price listings or auctions where the buyer chose a Buy It Now option), or the offer price (if the buyer and seller agree on a price using Best Offer, or the buyer accepts an offer sent by a seller), and does not include the value of any eBay voucher, coupon or discount offer applied by the buyer at checkout.
    • The postage and handling charges include postage, handling fees and any additional services paid for by the buyer (e.g. Signature on Delivery).
    • An order is defined as any number of items purchased by the same buyer at checkout with the same delivery method.
  • Final value fee percentages depend on the sale price and your seller performance.
    • A different percentage is applied to the amount per item over $4,000 (i.e. the final value fee for a $5,000 item is calculated as 13.4% of $4,000 + 2.5% of $1,000 + $0.30).
    • If your seller level is evaluated as Below Standard and/or your service metrics are evaluated as Very High, as described above, the variable portion of the final value fees is increased by 5.5 percentage points (e.g. a 13.4% + $0.30 final value fee would increase to 18.9% + $0.30). We'll indicate which listings are subject to the additional final value fee on your Seller account - opens in new window or tab.
  • If you offer or reference your contact information or ask a buyer for their contact information in the context of buying or selling outside of eBay, the final value fee is based on the total sale amount, which is determined as follows:
    • Auction-style format: The "total sale amount" is the auction start price, the Buy It Now price (if applicable), the reserve price (if applicable), or the price identified between the buyer and seller, whichever is highest.
    • Fixed price format: The "total sale amount" is the fixed price or the price identified between the buyer and seller, whichever is highest.
  • If the buyer receives a refund, you may be eligible for fee credits.

Final value fee example – seller performance

This example illustrates how final value fees are affected by your seller performance.

If your seller performance level is evaluated as Below Standard, a higher variable final value fee will apply to all your sales.

If your seller level is Above Standard or Top Rated but your 'Item not as described' return rate is evaluated as Very High in one or more categories in your service metrics, a higher variable final value fee will apply to sales in those categories only.

These additional charges may apply to your selling activity:

Dispute fees

When you are found responsible for a chargeback or other disputed amount as per eBay's policies, we charge a dispute fee of $24.20 (incl. GST) for each dispute.

International sales fee

If your registered address is in Australia, you pay an international sales fee when the delivery location for the item (entered by the buyer during checkout) is outside Australia.

This fee is calculated as 1.1% (incl. GST) of the total sale amount (including postage and handling, and any tax or other applicable fees) and is automatically deducted from your sales proceeds.

If your registered address is not in Australia, please refer to the fee page for your country or region of residence for your international sales fee information.

Seller currency conversion charge

When you create listings or sell items on an international eBay site, eBay may convert your funds to a different currency in order to collect amounts owed by you to eBay, or to payout funds due to you.

For example, if your registered address is in Australia and you create a listing on eBay.de for which fees are due (such as insertion and/or optional listing upgrade fees), eBay will convert your funds from AUD to EUR using the transaction exchange rate applicable at the time of listing, in order to collect these fees. When the item sells on eBay.de, eBay will calculate your payout amount by converting the sales proceeds from EUR to AUD using the transaction exchange rate applicable at the time of the sale.

If eBay converts your funds, the conversion will be completed at the transaction exchange rate we set for the relevant currency exchange. eBay's transaction exchange rate is composed of a base exchange rate plus a conversion charge. The conversion charge is a fixed percentage applied to the base exchange rate and retained by eBay. The base exchange rate reflects rates within the wholesale currency markets applicable to the currency pairing on the day of the conversion, or the prior business day. If exchange rates are set by law or regulation, the base exchange rate reflects the government reference rates.

If your registered address is in Australia, the seller currency conversion charge applied and retained by eBay is 3.3% (incl. GST). If your registered address is not in Australia, please refer to the fee page for your country or region of residence for your seller currency conversion charge information.
