1. What is PayPal?

PayPal is a safe, easy and fast way to pay online without sharing your credit/debit card and bank account details or other financial information.

2. Why is PayPal secure?

PayPal uses SSL technology to keep your information safe. In addition, when you send a payment using PayPal, the recipient won't receive your sensitive financial information such as your credit card or bank account number. This way, you don't have to worry about sending money to people you don't know. PayPal also has industry-leading anti-fraud features which help keep your transactions safe.

3. How do I sign up for a PayPal account?

4. How do I pay with PayPal on eBay.com.au?

Paying for eBay items with PayPal is simple. There are two ways to complete a payment.

  • You can pay using your PayPal account, funded by your credit card, debit card or bank account. Make sure you have added a funding source before trying to pay.
  • If you have enough balance in your PayPal account, you can use this to make the payment directly.
5. How do I sell with PayPal on eBay.com.au?

1. Check the box next to PayPal in the "payments and postage" section of the Sell Your Item form.

2. Add the email address you have or you intend to register with your PayPal account.

3. If you don’t already have one you will need to open a PayPal account. You can still list your items for sale without a PayPal account but you will need to open one to collect your funds once your items have been paid for.

PayPal will now appear automatically as a payment option in your listings.

The PayPal logo will also appear automatically next to your item in the search results, making it easy for buyers to see which items offer PayPal.

When your buyer sends a PayPal payment for an eBay item, you will receive an email notifying you of the payment received.

Log in to your PayPal account and review the payment details, including the details of the sender, and the amount. You can also review the amount charged in fees for this transaction. As a seller with a Premier or Business account, you will be charged a small fee for receiving payments into your PayPal account. These fees may vary. Learn more about PayPal fees.

19. I’ve heard it can take PayPal 21 days to release funds after I’ve been paid for an item. Is that true?

To further reduce the number of disputes, PayPal may delay the release of funds for up to 21 days or until a buyer leaves you positive feedback. This is targeted at a very small percentage of items which pose the greatest risk. The overwhelming majority of sellers will not be affected. Sellers will be notified at the time of listing that their payment may be held. Having one payment held does not mean that all the seller’s payments will be held. Each transaction is treated separately .

20. How will a hold appear in my PayPal account?

The status of the transaction will state “On Hold – Ship Now” if you are selling an item and as “[XXXX – confirm with PayPal]” if you’re buying an item. Clicking the “Details” link on the payment in the My Account section of PayPal will provide further information. If you’re selling an item you will be notified before you’ve completed the listing if the payment may be put on hold.

21. Can a seller refund the payment while it is "on hold"?

A seller may still use the Refund link to send the payment back to the buyer.

22. Will any portion of the payment be exempt from the hold to allow the seller to pay for shipping?

The entire payment will be placed “on hold”. Sellers are advised to post the item to speed up the process leading to the release of funds.

23. Can I offer pay on pick up and not offer PayPal?

PayPal must be offered on all listings including those with pay on pick up, except for cars, motorcycles, aircraft, boats, caravans, trailers, trucks (commercials), services, real estate and businesses for sale.

24. If I offer PayPal on pick up am I covered by PayPal Seller Protection?

Seller Protection requires proof of shipment which is not available for in person transactions.

25. What payment methods can I accept with pay on pick up?

eBay recommends you accept bank cheque or cash when a buyer chooses to pay and pick up their item in person.

26. Can I pass on my PayPal fees to my buyers?

PayPal Australia does not allow surcharging (passing on PayPal fees) so you need to take into account all costs when setting your Starting or Buy it Now price.

27. What happens when money is paid into my PayPal account without the account being linked to my eBay account?

You should be prompted to enter an email address when selecting your preferred payment method in the sell your item form. All you need to do is simply enter an email address and you’ll be reminded to sign up after you have sold your item enabling you to access your funds.

28. What is the difference between a Personal and Premier/Business PayPal account?

Although there is no limit on the amount of PayPal balance, bank transfers and eCheque payments that can be accepted with a Personal account, it is limited to receiving six credit card transactions per twelve months for a small fee per transaction. Therefore Personal accounts aren’t recommended for regular sellers.

Once a Personal account has reached its limit, the only way card payments will be accepted is if the account is upgraded, at no extra cost, to a Premier or Business account. To upgrade your account click here.

Premier and Business accounts are perfectly suited for sellers who regularly accept debit and credit card payments. Not only could Premier and Business accounts enable you to pay lower merchant fees but they provide access to a wide range of services and tools at no extra cost. Additionally, PayPal doesn't charge the extra fees that you might have with a merchant account, like setup fees, monthly fees and gateway fees.
