Fund your PayPal account

Your PayPal account is funded in one of the following ways:

  1. PayPal account balance
  2. Personal bank account
  3. Credit/debit card

PayPal account balance

When you make a PayPal payment the money is first taken from your PayPal account balance. If your account balance cannot cover the full amount, the payment will be funded by the account you've linked to your PayPal account.

Note: If you like you can add extra funds to your PayPal balance. Just log in to your PayPal account, click Add Funds and follow the instructions. You will then be able to transfer funds directly from your bank account into your PayPal balance. This process is free and you can continue using your PayPal account as usual while waiting for the funds to clear (three to five working days).

Personal bank account

If you've linked your personal bank account to your PayPal account, this will be the default method used to fund your payment if there is no balance in your PayPal account. The transfer will occur instantly and you will see it reflected in your bank statement.

Credit/debit card

If there is not enough money in your bank account to make the payment, your debit or credit card acts as a back-up funding method. If you prefer to pay for a specific transaction with your credit card, simply log into your PayPal account, click on the Profile tab and then the Credit card link.
