Q1. What is required to sell on eBay Motors?
To sell on eBay Motors, all you need is a free seller’s account. No credit card is required. We also suggest that you have a digital camera handy to take photos of your vehicle!

Q2. What are the fees for selling?
eBay Motors has low fixed fees for selling vehicles and for featuring items on eBay Motors.

  • The insertion (listing) fee for all vehicles - auctions or Buy It Now listings - is a fixed $5, or $19.95 for a Classified Ad. Twelve photos are also included free of charge for all vehicles, as well as several Upgrade Features - Gallery, Supersize, Picture Show, and Picture Pack. Q3. What is the best pricing strategy?
Typically successful vehicle sellers use one of three approaches to sell on eBay Motors.
  • Auction with low start price and a reserve: The low start price (at say $1) gets buyers excited to bid on your vehicle while the reserve protects your asset. You should set the reserve at the minimum price you would be prepared to accept. This encourages buyers to bid and can create a flurry of interest in your vehicle.
  • Fixed price with Best Offer: This new and exclusive format to eBay Motors allows you to sell your vehicle just like you would face-to-face with the added convenience of doing it online. Set your start price at your ideal amount and allow buyers to make offers on your vehicle. You can choose to accept or reject these offers. Learn more about Best Offer
  • Auction with higher start price and no reserve: Reserves put some bidders off as they don’t know what sort of price you are looking for. Set the start price at the minimum you would accept and buyers know that if they bid they may win.


Q4. What length of time should I put my vehicle listing on for?
With high priced items like vehicles you want to give prospective buyers as much time as possible to find your vehicle and consider purchasing it. You can choose from 3, 5, 7, or 10 day auctions. Longer durations such as 7 or 10 days typically work best for vehicles. If you are using our fixed price format (with the Best Offer option) you can extend your listing to 14 days.

Q5. What information should I include in my listing?
Unlike a newspaper advertisement, there are no word limits for your eBay listing so the key is to be as comprehensive as possible with the information you provide. Put yourself in the shoes of a buyer and think about all the information you would require to be comfortable with purchasing a vehicle online.

Firstly, the more photos you include the better. The first 12 photos are free! Ideally include 12 photos – (exterior: left side, right side, front, rear, engine, close up of wheel, and interior: front seats, back seats, dashboard, odometer close up and phots of any damage). A good description includes a general description of the vehicle, a list of features, information on the car’s history, why you are selling the car and terms of sale. Be honest to a fault as this builds bidder trust and will help you get a higher price. Be professional, thorough and clear.

Q6. How many photos should I have in my listing?
Remember that many potential buyers will not see their vehicle in person before taking action on your listing. More photos sell vehicles – let your potential buyers “kick the tyres” of your car online. For all vehicles, the first 12 photos are FREE and you can also select additional free picture upgrades such as Gallery, Supersize, Picture Show, and Picture Pack. Q7. What features should I use to get the best chance of selling my car at a good price?
All of eBay’s features can help give you a better chance of selling your car at a good price by making your listing stand out more. We highly recommend you use Picture Pack with 12 photos at a minimum to give your buyers the ability to see as much of the car as possible online. Q8. Do I have to let the buyer test drive the car before they pay?
There is no obligation to give the buyer a test drive, however if it has been requested and they appear to be seriously considering purchasing your vehicle, a test drive may help close the sale

Q9. What price can I expect to get for my vehicle on eBay Motors?
As a private seller, one of the advantages of selling on eBay Motors is the great price you will get for your vehicle. Typically private sellers get a similar price to selling through traditional channels with the added convenience of completing the sale online. Q10. What happens if my car doesn’t sell?
If the auction closes unsuccessfully, you can relist the car and your listing fee will be refunded if the car sells. When you relist your car consider lowering the price and improving the listing, and make sure you have as many photos and details as possible.

Q11. What do I do if someone offers to buy the vehicle outside of eBay?
eBay prohibits email offers to buy or sell listed items outside of the eBay web site. Offers of this nature are a potential fraud risk for both buyers and sellers and should be avoided in all instances. If you do sell the vehicle outside of eBay, eBay cannot assist in the event of a dispute (e.g. Unpaid Item) or take any action against the buyer. Q12. What do I do if the buyer does not pay for the item won once sold?
eBay reserves the right to take action against buyers who do not pay for items they have won. Sellers should try to contact the buyer and resolve any issues first. If this is unsuccessful sellers can file an Unpaid Item dispute with eBay for each of their items that are purchased but not paid for. eBay will attempt to get the buyer to complete the transaction and then failing that may issue a strike on the account of the buyer who does not honour their obligation to pay. Sellers with Unpaid Items under the Unpaid Item Dispute process are eligible for Final Value Fee credits. Also, if the item is relisted and sells the second time, eBay will refund the Insertion Fee for the relisting. Learn more about how the free relist policy works.
