The following types of cars sell well on eBay: • Wholesale and trade-in vehicles that do not suit your local market may suit the national market on eBay Motors • Aged inventory that you’d normally sell to a wholesaler • Vehicles that have a strong following like performance cars or discontinued models • Specialty, exotic, niche and collector cars are well known for being good choices for the national exposure provided by eBay Motors. Q4: What is the best pricing strategy? Typically successful vehicle sellers use one of three approaches to sell on eBay Motors: 1. Auction with low start price and a reserve: The low start price (at say $1) gets buyers excited to bid on your vehicle while the reserve protects your asset. You should set the reserve at the minimum price you would be prepared to accept. This encourages buyers to bid and can create a flurry of interest in your vehicle. 2. Fixed price with Best Offer: This new and exclusive format to eBay Motors allows you to sell your vehicle just like you would face-to-face with the added convenience of doing it online. Set your start price at your ideal amount and allow buyers to make offers on your vehicle. You can choose to accept or reject these offers. Learn more about Best Offer 3. Auction with higher start price and no reserve: Reserves put some bidders off as they don’t know what sort of price you are looking for. Set the start price at the minimum you would accept and buyers know that if they bid they may win. Q5: What information should I include in my listing? Unlike a newspaper advertisement, there are no word limits for your eBay listing so the key is to be as comprehensive as possible with the information you provide. Put yourself in the shoes of a buyer and think about all the information you would require to be comfortable with purchasing a vehicle online. Firstly, the more photos you include the better. The first 12 photos are free! Ideally include 12 photos – (exterior: left side, right side, front, rear, engine, close up of wheel, and interior: front seats, back seats, dashboard, odometer close up and photos of any damage). A good description includes a general description of the vehicle, a list of features, information on the car’s history, why you are selling the car and terms of sale. As a dealer you should also include all information required by state regulations (see below). Be honest to a fault as this builds bidder trust and will help you get a higher price. Be professional, thorough and clear. Q6: How many photos should I have in my listing? Remember that many potential buyers will not see their vehicle in person before taking action on your listing. More photos sell vehicles – let your potential buyers “kick the tyres” of your car online. The first 12 photos are FREE and you can also select additional free picture upgrades such as Gallery, Supersize, Picture Show, and Picture Pack. For more tips on photos have a look at an ideal listing. Q7: What length of time should I put my vehicle listing on for? With high priced items like vehicles you want to give prospective buyers as much time as possible to find your vehicle and consider purchasing it. You can choose from 3, 5, 7, or 10 days but longer durations such as 7 or 10 days typically work best for vehicles. Q8: What features should I use to get the best chance of selling my car at a good price? All of eBay Motors’ features can help give you a better chance of selling your car at a good price by making your listing stand out more. We highly recommend you use Picture Pack with 12 photos at a minimum to give your buyers the ability to see as much of the car as possible online. Q9: What price can I expect to get for my vehicle on eBay Motors? As a dealer, one of the advantages of selling on eBay Motors is the great price you will get for your vehicle. Typically dealers get a price between wholesale and retail. You can see what prices other sellers have achieved by doing a completed items search. Q10: What do I do if someone offers to buy the vehicle outside of eBay? Ultimately if you are a dealer and you want to build up a good feedback reputation, it is in your best interests to complete the sale on eBay. eBay prohibits email offers to buy or sell listed items outside of the eBay Web site. Offers of this nature are a potential fraud risk for both buyers and sellers and should be avoided in all instances. If you do sell the vehicle outside of eBay, eBay cannot assist in the event of a dispute (e.g. Unpaid Item) or take any action against the buyer. If you would like to report a user who is attempting to buy an item outside of eBay, please refer to the Sales Outside of eBay page. Q11: Do I have to let the buyer test drive the car before they pay? There is no obligation to give the buyer a test drive, however if it has been requested and they appear to be seriously considering purchasing your vehicle, a test drive may help close the sale. Q12: What do I do if the buyer does not pay for the item once sold? eBay reserves the right to take action against buyers who do not pay for items they have won. Sellers should try to contact the buyer and resolve any issues first. If this is unsuccessful sellers can file an Unpaid Item dispute with eBay for each of their items that are purchased but not paid for. eBay will attempt to get the buyer to complete the transaction and then failing that may issue a strike on the account of the buyer who does not honour their obligation to pay. Sellers with Unpaid Items under the Unpaid Item Dispute process are eligible for Final Value Fee credits. Also, if the item is relisted and sells the second time, eBay will refund the Insertion Fee for the relisting. Learn more about how the free relist policy works. Q13: What happens if my car doesn’t sell? If the auction closes unsuccessfully, you can relist the car and your listing fee will be refunded if the car sells. When you relist your car consider lowering the price and improving the listing, and make sure you have as many photos and details as possible. Dealer Legal and Regulatory FAQs
Q1: Do I need an auctioneer's license to advertise a vehicle for sale?
A1: An auctioneer's license is not necessary to advertise a vehicle on eBay. Q2: Do I need to display a New South Wales "pink slip" in my listing? A2: In New South Wales, a "pink slip" is a vehicle safety inspection report and is a compulsory requirement for registration of a vehicle, but displaying a pink slip in your listing is not a compulsory requirement. However, offering or displaying a valid pink slip for an unregistered vehicle can provide more confidence for the potential buyer because it indicates the roadworthiness of the vehicle in New South Wales. Q3: Is the "pink slip" only for NSW registered vehicles? A3: There may be requirements for vehicle safety inspection reports in your state or territory. You should contact the relevant road transport authority in your state to discuss these requirements. Q4: Can I advertise at two different prices? A4: In some states under Fair Trading legislation, it is an offence to sell goods, including a vehicle, to which more than one price is appended if the price is greater than the lower, or lowest, of the prices displayed elsewhere. Attaching more than one price to goods can mislead others as to the correct price for that item. Whenever an item has more than one price marked on it, it is an offence to sell it for more than the lowest marked price. It is important that you consult the relevant Fair Trading legislation in your state or territory or contact your department of fair trading and consumer affairs to determine what the laws in your state are. Using eBay Motors' Best Offer feature may assist you in complying with these requirements. Q5: Do I need a dealer's license? A5: Generally a dealer's license is not required to sell your vehicle as a private or one-off sale. However, if you sell more than a specified number of vehicles in a year then you may be required to hold a dealer's license. You should contact the relevant road transport authority or department of fair trading in your state for further information about these legal requirements as you may be required to hold a license where you sell more than a specified number of vehicles in a year. Q6: As a dealer, what requirements do I need to meet? A6: eBay Motors recommends that the following information is included in all listings as requirements do vary by state:
