Adding Your Pictures to Your eBay Listing

eBay offers Basic and Enhanced Upload Picture Services, enabling you to easily add pictures to your listing. Using these services, eBay will host your pictures for the duration of your listing. You can also use a Self-hosting service if you want you have your pictures accessed from a different web site.

The Basic Uploader can be used on all the supported operating system and browser configurations. The Basic Uploader does not compress pictures before upload. Upload time depends on the size of your originals and the speed of your Internet connection.

  • Basic Uploader – Enables you to upload pictures to eBay, but does not offer more advanced picture editing. Basic uploads pictures at their full size and standardizes them for eBay use after upload to eBay servers.

  • Enhanced Uploader – Has advanced editing and enables you to crop and rotate your pictures from the selling form. Enhanced usually uploads pictures faster because it standardizes copies of your pictures for eBay use before upload.

  • Self-hosting – Allows you to host your own picture or with a Web service.

Note: If you are new to eBay only the Basic uploader is displayed. To use the Enhanced uploader, click the “Add/remove options” link within the Bring your item to life with pictures section of the Create Your Listing page, and then select the “Show eBay Enhanced Picture Services options” check box.

Tip: Before you start the upload process, it will save time if you rename your photo files with meaningful names and collect them in a central place on your computer so you browse and locate a particular photo for the particular item you are selling.

Using the Enhanced Uploader

If you are using Windows 98SE and Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, you can use the eBay Enhanced Uploader.

Note: You will need to click the “Add/remove options” link on the Create Your Listing page, to enable the Enhanced option (see the Screen above).

To add pictures to your listing:

You can make edits to the picture such as rotating, cropping, or adjusting the contrast and brightness of the picture before uploading by clicking an icon above the large picture preview.

Note: eBay does not automatically overwrite and upload pictures that you have retaken or edited on your computer. In order to edit replace a picture you must delete the existing picture and upload the picture again.

Using Self–hosting for your pictures

Instead of uploading your pictures to eBay, you can use another web service to host your pictures. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may give you some space on the Web where you can store your pictures. The Sell Your Item form has a field where you can enter the Web address (URL) of a picture hosted on the Web. That picture will be displayed in your listing. To display more than one externally hosted picture on eBay, you will have to use HTML in your listing.

  • Your picture file size should be under 50 KB (kilobytes) so that your item page will load quickly enough not to inconvenience buyers on slower Internet connections.

  • File transfer software, such as WS_FTP for PCs (includes eBay user reference guide) or Fetch Softworks for Macs may be required for uploading your picture file to your ISP or hosting service.

Additional options for managing your pictures

Picture Manager Subscription - Using Picture Manager, you can upload pictures as a group, store them indefinitely, and add them to listing after listing. Picture Manager works with the Sell Your Item form and Selling Manager Pro, so you can quickly load your pictures into your listings.

The Camera Icon

The camera icon ( )displays to indicate that a photo is included in your listing. The camera will display if:

  • You used eBay Picture Services to list your pictures.

  • You entered a picture URL (Web address) in the Picture URL box on the Sell Your Item form.

If you used HTML in the Sell Your Item description to display a picture of your item, you can get the camera icon to display by selecting the check box, “The description already includes a picture URL for my item. ”.

This check box should only be selected if you have inserted a picture of your item in the description box. Using this check box to indicate that you have a picture when you do not is deceptive to potential bidders and is a violation of eBay Policy.

Note: If you included a Web address in the Picture URL box, it is not necessary to select the check box -- you will automatically get the camera icon. If you use a Gallery picture, your Gallery picture will display in place of the camera.
