Putting Store items on sale

Sales are a great way to promote items in your Store. You can create sales that are seasonal, for specific holidays, for specific categories or just to clear out inventory.

Determining discounts

You can choose a price discount or a free postage discount.

Fixed price listings can be discounted by a percentage or by a specific dollar amount. For example, an item selling for $10 can be discounted by 20%, or by $2. This means the item is on sale for $8 in both cases.

Price discounts can't be applied to auction-style listings. You can select a free postage discount for any listing, however, including fixed price and auction-style listings.

If you select a free postage discount, it applies to the first domestic postage service you selected when you listed your item. The free postage discount doesn't apply to any additional services that you included in your listing.

Note: All items with price discounts can be discounted by 5% to 75%. The sale price of your item appears as a Buy It Now price anywhere on the site your listings typically appear. Price discounts also show up for buyers with a special look (strikethrough pricing and the calculated discount) in the following areas:

  • Listings

  • Cross-promotions in listings

  • Watch List section of My eBay

  • Watched item reminder email

  • Stores promotion boxes

  • Seller email marketing

Buyers see that your listings have a free postage sale in these areas:

  • Listings

  • Watch List section of My eBay

  • Watched item reminder email

Creating and managing sales

You can create and view scheduled, active and inactive sales within your Store in Markdown Manager. Sales can be scheduled for a later date or rescheduled once they're over.

To create a sale in Markdown Manager:
  1. Go to My eBay > Account > Marketing Tools or Seller Hub > Marketing > Merchandising.

  2. Click Markdown Manager on the left side of the page.

  3. Click Create Sale.

  4. Once you create a sale, you see a confirmation message. You receive an email to let you know when your sale is created.

To edit a sale in Markdown Manager:
  1. Go to My eBay > Account > Marketing Tools or Seller Hub > Marketing > Merchandising.

  2. Click Markdown Manager on the left side of the page.

  3. View sales and click the corresponding sale name.

Promoting your sales

Promote your sale by sending a customised email to announce your discounted listings to your Stores newsletter subscribers. The number and frequency of emails you can send is based on your subscription limits and other eBay policies.

Creating and editing a promotional email in Markdown Manager

In the Promote your sale section, your first mailing list is selected automatically.

Note:

  • If you don't want to send an email to promote your sale, clear the check box for the mailing list.

  • A one-time email is sent to the mailing lists on the same date and time as the scheduled sale.

  • The edit your email link lets you edit the subject and message text fields of your emails.

  • You can edit your promotional emails as long as the sale hasn't started.

Things to keep in mind:
  • Once the sale has begun, the Promote your sale section no longer appears in Markdown Manager's Edit Sale page.

  • If you don't have any mailing lists, the Promote your sale section doesn't appear in Markdown Manager's Create Sale page. Find out more about setting up your mailing lists.

  • We may, at our discretion, promote your sale by displaying the word "sale" or "markdown" with your listing in various places on eBay.

Markdown Manager rules

  • Revising the item price, postage cost or both for an item on the Revise My Item page removes the item from a sale.

  • Most sales are processed within an hour.

  • Items can be discounted 5% to 75% or by a specific amount (e.g. $2 off), but can't be discounted to below $1.

  • There are minimum and maximum durations for price sales. A fixed price sale can be one to 28 days. The minimum duration between sales is seven days.

  • Free postage sales on auction-style listings have no end dates. Sales on auction-style listings are valid until the listing ends.

  • If a listing is already on sale, you won't be able to add a new sale. For example, if your listing is on a price sale, you won't be able to add a free postage sale to that listing.

  • If you have listings in multiple currencies and choose to discount by an amount (not a percentage), that discount is in the currency of the listings and won't be converted. For example, a discount entered as "5" will be AUD $5 for listings on eBay.com.au and USD $5 on eBay.com.

  • Sales can be scheduled up to 30 days in advance and we keep sale information for up to 15 months after the end date.

  • If you have bids on an auction-style listing, you can't add or remove a free postage sale.

  • Items need to be listed for seven days before being added to a sale.

  • If you've revised either the item price or postage costs within the past seven days, you won't be able to add the item to a sale.

  • If an item is already in a sale, but you revise either the item price or postage costs, the item is removed from the sale.

You can't add a free postage sale if your listing includes one or more of the following:

  • Handling cost

  • Freight

  • Local pickup only

Limits to sales in Markdown Manager

Sales in Markdown Manager are limited in these ways:

  • The number of listings you can change in one day is 5,000 for any Stores subscription level. Changes include scheduling, editing or adding listings to a sale.

  • A price or free postage sale on a fixed price listing can be one to 28 days.

  • Free postage sales on auction-style listings are valid until the listing ends.

  • A listing can only be in one active sale at a time, but a listing can exist in multiple scheduled and inactive sales. There must be at least seven days between sales for a particular listing.
