Prescription Drugs and Devices

Prescriptions for humans

eBay does not permit the listing of any controlled drug or item that requires a prescription from a licensed practitioner (such as a doctor, dentist, or optometrist) to dispense. Certain drugs, such as insulin, come in prescription and non-prescription forms. Such drugs may also be prohibited. If you are uncertain as to the permissibility of your item, please contact eBay prior to listing. Examples of prescription items not permitted on eBay include, but are not limited to:

  • Contact lenses

  • Prescription eyewear (vintage eyeglasses sold for collectible purposes are permitted)

  • Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) units

  • Defibrillators

  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines

  • All forms of insulin (including non-prescription forms)

eBay also does not permit unauthorised medical devices such as ear candles. Additionally, eBay does not permit the listing of any components of prescription or over-the-counter drugs unless the sale of such components without a prescription has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration

How can you be sure that you're not listing or bidding on a prescription drug? Refer to the Therapeutic Goods Administration advice on prescription medicines.

Unregistered Agricultural & Veterinary Chemical Products

Unregistered agricultural and veterinary chemical products must not be listed on eBay. eBay prohibits sellers from advertising any unregistered product that fits the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) definition of an Agricultural Chemical product or Veterinary Chemical product. All agricultural and veterinary chemical products offered for supply on eBay must have an APVMA/NRA registration number.

eBay looks to the APVMA for guidance on items that violate their policies on inappropriate marketing.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions by eBay, including:

  • Listing cancellation

  • Limits on account privileges

  • Account suspension

  • Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

  • Loss of PowerSeller status

Some Examples

Unregistered Agricultural Chemical Products

  • Any insecticide, herbicide or fungicide including home garden products or fungicidal claims

  • Any natural product with insecticidal, herbicidal

Unregistered Veterinary Chemical Products

  • Sheep drenches

  • Medicated dog Food and treats

  • Flea and Tick products

Additional Information

View related legislation at the APVMA.

Why does eBay have this policy?

eBay urges its sellers and buyers to comply with all governmental laws and regulations. Since law prohibits the advertising and supply of unregistered agricultural and veterinary chemical products and sales of these items may cause harm to eBay or its members, sellers may not list items with such claims on eBay
