Cookies and Web Beacons

Cookies are small pieces of information "remembered" by your browser. eBay uses cookies so that you can navigate through our Web site faster. We also use cookies to keep track of page views, ads, and overall page flow. We disclose this fact in our Privacy Policy.

We implement some of these cookies through our technology. Other types of cookies are served by third parties that we work with such as AOL (American Online), DoubleClick and SuperStats, a company that provides page view and data tracking technology.

***Important: eBay does not and does not permit these third parties to collect personal information about you from cookies or web beacons. This means that you remain anonymous and your information cannot be associated with eBay, another Web site, or any "real world" marketing database.***

eBay has always clearly identified the use of cookies, and we will continue to be open and honest with you about their use.

We'd also like to clarify some inaccurate cookie information we've seen on public discussion forums.

*Search page
If you go to our search page and enter a search term such as "red fire truck" you will see a line in the source code which contains "kw=red fire truck". The search term becomes the keyword. This allows our code to search eBay for the search term you choose.

We do associate banners with keywords. However, our policy is to not serve up banner ads that are directly competitive with the search term you enter.

*Web Beacons
Web beacons are 1 x 1 clear gif pixels that are placed in the Web page code. We use web beacons for many of the same purposes we use cookies. We also use them to track the traffic pattern of members from one page to another. The information is collected in bulk and does not allow you to be personally identified.

*Discussion board cookies
Our third-party service provider for the discussion boards (eBay the Round Table and the Member to Member Help board) uses session cookies to efficiently facilitate the conversation thread and overall service functions.

*** Please let us reiterate - We do not and do not permit these third parties to collect personal information about you from cookies or web beacons. ***

A technological note: The source code and cookie text can be very long and confusing. It takes a strong background in HTML and programming to fully understand the code. We understand that your privacy is important and that is why we have a detailed Privacy Policy describing how we use your information. Our Privacy policy also requires us to notify you of changes.

eBay will continue to use cookies so that your experience with us is easy, safe, and personalised (your My eBay options, selling preferences, local trading region, etc.). Cookies, along with other mechanisms, e.g., IP Address tracking, may also be used for trust and safety purposes.

Please note that if you are viewing third party content on eBay (such as an item listing), there may be cookies or web beacons within those listings. We do not permit this activity. However, it may happen from time to time. We do not authorise nor to we grant access to any of your personal information to these parties.
