Bid Retractions

Before bidding on any items on eBay, we strongly encourage you to:

  1. Read the item description and check the seller's feedback.
  2. If you have any questions regarding the listing, email the seller prior to placing a bid by clicking on the seller's User ID. Remember: Every bid on eBay is potentially binding.
However, under certain circumstances, eBay allows you to retract bids. For example:

It's OK to retract a bid if...

  • You accidentally enter a wrong bid amount. For instance, you bid AU$99.50 instead of AU$9.95. (If this occurs you will need to quickly re-enter the correct bid amount after retracting your bid).
  • The description of an item you have bid on has changed.
  • You cannot reach the seller. This means that you have tried contacting the seller and his or her phone number doesn't work, or your email to the seller has come back as undeliverable.
It's NOT OK to retract a bid if...
  • You change your mind about the item.
  • You decide you can't really afford it.
  • You bid a little higher than you wanted.
  • You bid on multiple listings of the same item and you don't want to purchase all of them.

When you retract a bid, you will eliminate all bids you have placed in that listing. So if you are correcting a bid error, you will have to bid again.

Your retraction will be shown in your bidding history for this listing, and you will be asked to explain your retraction to the seller and other bidders. So, please include a very short explanation of why you retracted. Your total number of bid retractions in the past 6 months is displayed in your Feedback Profile. Learn more about the Feedback Forum.

We will investigate excessive bid retractions, which could result in the suspension of your eBay membership. Bids retracted within the last 24 hrs of listing can be viewed as Bid shielding, which is a serious violation of our policy.

Special Retraction Rules
If you place a bid before the last 12-hour period of the auction:

you may retract that bid before that last 12-hour period but only for exceptional circumstances.

you will not be allowed to retract that bid during the last 12-hour period of the auction.

If you place a bid during the last 12-hour period of the auction: you will be allowed to retract the bid for exceptional circumstances but only if you do so within one hour after placing the bid.

For your protection, you need a password to retract a bid. If you haven't selected a personal password, or if you've forgotten your password, please request a new temporary password now.
