Protect your password and account information

Important: eBay employees will never ask you to provide your password by email.

Take the following steps to protect your password and your account.

  • Create a different password for each of your online accounts. Avoid using the same password for your eBay account and your email account, or using the same password you use on other sites.

  • Create a more secure password by using a combination of letters and numbers.

  • Change your password often; at least every 30 to 60 days.

Note: Before you change your password, make sure your email address is current. eBay uses this to complete the password change process (for more information, see Changing Your Contact Information). To change your password now, sign in to My eBay and go to Personal Information.

  • Do not share your password with others.

  • Review the privacy policies of third parties that offer you services to determine how your information will be protected.

  • If you believe that someone has obtained your password, change it by going to Personal Information in My eBay.

  • Beware of phishing (fake) emails and websites. These emails typically ask you to submit personal information such as your credit card number or your eBay password. They often contain links to web pages that ask you to sign in and submit information. If you receive or suspect you have received such an email, do not respond to it or click on any links. For more information, see Reporting Spoof (Fake) Emails.

  • Before entering you eBay password, make sure you are signing into a genuine eBay site. If you're signing into the Australian site, enter your password at a web address that begins with https://signin.ebay.com.au/. For a complete list of international sites, see Recognising Spoof (Fake) eBay Websites.
