Managing Your PayPal Account

To access your PayPal account, log in to www.paypal.com.au or click the “PayPal Account” link in the “My Account” section of My eBay. From the My PayPal Account Information page, you can check your account overview, account history, or update your account information.

Using your PayPal account on eBay

PayPal for buyers: PayPal is a convenient method for paying for items on eBay. If you don’t already have a PayPal account, learn more about the benefits of paying with PayPal or sign up now.

If you already have a PayPal account, you can use PayPal to send payments for eBay items. To access your PayPal account, log in to www.paypal.com.au.

PayPal for sellers: When you offer PayPal as a payment method on your eBay listings, your buyers can pay quickly and conveniently using a credit card, bank account, or PayPal balance. If you don’t already have a PayPal account, learn more about the benefits of offering PayPal as a payment method or sign up now.

If you already have a PayPal account, you can accept PayPal payments from eBay buyers for eBay items. You can also use PayPal to automatically pay your eBay seller fees.

Logging in to your PayPal account

To log in to PayPal, you must enter your email address and password. Be sure to log in to PayPal using the email address you used when you signed up for the PayPal account.

Note: Your PayPal email address and password are separate from your eBay User ID and password.

Downloading your PayPal account history

Your PayPal account history contains detailed information about all of your transactions, including payments sent, payments received, withdrawals, money requests, and more. You can download your PayPal account history into a file that can be used with Quicken, QuickBooks, and most common spreadsheet and database applications. Becoming PayPal Verified

Being verified means you have completed the required steps to confirm your identity with PayPal. Because verification increases the security of the PayPal network, once you are verified you are able to:

  • Raise your sending and withdrawal limits

  • Fund PayPal payments from your bank account

  • List items on other eBay sites

  • Sell certain items (eg those that can be counterfeited)

To become PayPal verified:

  • If you have a PayPal account, log in to PayPal and click Get Verified on the left side of the Account Overview page

  • On the next page, click Add Bank Account and complete the form with your account details.  (Note:  you may only use an Australian bank account.)

  • PayPal will then deposit two small amounts into your account.  This process can take 3 to 5 days.

  • Once you see the two desposits in your bank account, log into your PayPal account and click Complete Bank Setup on the Account Overview page (found in the “To do list” section.)

  • Enter the two deposit amounts as propted.  The process is then complete.

Note: If you do not yet have a PayPal account, you can become verified as part of the sign up process

To link your eBay account to your PayPal account:

  • Click on My eBay from the top of most eBay pages and sign in.

  • Click the Addresses link from the left hand side of the page.

  • Click the 'View all postal addresses' link.

  • In the About Addresses section, check to see if there is any PayPal account linked to your eBay account. If not, click the Add PayPal Addresses button and sign into your PayPal account. When you do this, your eBay and PayPal verified accounts will be linked.

  • If there is already a linked PayPal account, check to make sure it is the correct one. Otherwise, remove the link and link to the correct one by clicking the Add PayPal Addresses button.

Linking a Funding Method to Your PayPal Account

Your PayPal account is funded in one of the following ways:

  • PayPal account balance

  • Personal bank account

  • Credit/debit card

When you make a PayPal payment the money is first taken from your PayPal account balance. If your account balance cannot cover the full amount, the payment will be funded by the account you've linked to your PayPal account.

  Note: If you like you can add extra funds to your PayPal balance. Just log in to your PayPal account, click Add Funds and follow the instructions. You will then be able to transfer funds directly from your bank account into your PayPal balance. This process is free and you can continue using your PayPal account as usual while waiting for the funds to clear (5 - 7 working days).

Linking your Personal bank account to your PayPal account

If you've linked your personal bank account to your PayPal account, this will be the default method used to fund your payment if there is no balance in your PayPal account. The transfer will occur instantly and you will see it reflected in your bank statement.

Once you set up Direct Debit for an Australian bank account, you can add funds to your PayPal account via electronic funds transfer. After you initiate an electronic funds transfer, the funds are available in your PayPal account within 5-7 working days. You receive an email confirmation every time you add funds to your PayPal account.

Note: If you do not want to add funds to your PayPal account, you can send a PayPal payment using a credit card or instant bank account transfer.

  •  Log in to your PayPal account

  • Click the Add Funds subtab.

  • Click the Transfer Funds From a Bank Account link. Choose the bank account from which you would like to add funds and enter the amount

  • Click Continue. Review the details of your transaction then click Submit.

Funds should appear in your PayPal account within 5-7 working days.

Credit/debit card

If there is not enough money in your bank account to make the payment, your debit or credit card acts as a back-up funding method. If you prefer to pay for a specific transaction with your credit card you will be able to designate your credit card as your funding source during the payment flow.

PayPal Dispute Resolution

If you pay for an item using PayPal and there is a problem with the transaction, you can follow the PayPal Dispute Resolution process to reach a speedy conclusion with your trading partner. By opening a dispute, you are asking the seller to help you resolve the problem.

When to open a dispute

  • If you still haven't received the item you purchased.

  • If the item you received was significantly not as described by the seller.

  Note: Make sure you've allowed sufficient time for postage before filing a dispute.

How to open a dispute

  • Log into your PayPal account.

  • Select the Resolution Centre tab.

  • Click on Report a problem. Then click on Report a problem again.

  • Click on Item dispute then Continue.

  • Enter or select the PayPal Transaction ID for the transaction you would like to dispute.

  • Review the information and select a reason for the dispute.

  • Enter the details of the transaction, enter your message to the seller and click Continue.

  Please note: You have up to 45 days after the payment date to open a dispute.

What if the seller is non-responsive?

If you feel you can't work out a resolution with the seller, you can escalate the dispute to a claim - as long as it is within 20 days of the date the dispute was opened.

By escalating to a claim, you are asking PayPal to investigate the case and decide the outcome based on evidence supplied by you and the seller.

How do I make a claim?

Once you have created a dispute, simply log into your PayPal account and go to the Resolution Centre. Choose the case you opened and use the options available to escalate it to a claim.

Closing Your PayPal Account

If you close your PayPal account, you will no longer be able to:

  • Make any purchases using PayPal

  • Offer PayPal as a payment method on your listings

  • View your PayPal account history

  • * Sell on eBay

Once you have closed your account, all of your outstanding transactions will be cancelled immediately. Your remaining account balance will need to be withdrawn to your bank (or can be donated to charity.)
