TRADING PHONES SAFELY ON eBAY
Every mobile handset can be identified by its unique IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). From September 2003, Telstra, Vodafone & Optus are scheduled to block the use of all reported lost and stolen phones being used on any Australian network.
As a buyer or seller of second hand mobiles, we recommend that you should take the following steps to ensure that mobile you trade is not recorded as lost or stolen.
Buyers
- Check to see if the handset IMEI number has been listed by the seller.
- If it hasn’t, email the seller to request the IMEI (& ask them to add it to their listing)
- Check the status of that handset by following the steps in the IMEI check outlined below
Sellers
- Always include your handset’s IMEI prominently in the listing
- If you are not sure what the IMEI is, simply press *#06# on your mobile
- Follow the steps outlined below in the IMEI check to ensure that you are not inadvertently selling a lost or stolen handset
Telstra IMEI Check
- Make sure you have the mobile’s IMEI at hand
- Ring 1900 964 634 (1900 YO IMEI)
- Key in the 15 digit IEMI and listen to the automated message that follows
- ALL CALLS COST $2.20 PER MINUTE (INCLUDING GST)
Additional information for CDMA phones
- CDMA handsets are locked to either of the two networks that use this technology: Telstra & Orange. Therefore, a new or used Orange handset can not be used on the Telstra network & vice versa.
- Telstra will reconnect any used CDMA handset that has previously been used on their network.
- Orange will only reconnect a used handset that has previously been used on their network if it is accompanied by a letter from the previous owner/ account holder. Buyers will need to ensure that this is attainable prior to purchase. For more information, please contact Orange on 133 488.
