Finding and Buying Toys

By Arno Lippassaar

Here are some tips for finding and buying toys.

Searching for a toy:
There are numerous ways to find the toys you seek. One of the best methods is to conduct a search. Go to the Toys page and start your search there, or go to a subcategory of Toys, then start a search. You can use any words you think would be related to that item (see search tips). You can use company names or actual toy names. Any toy description with a symbol next to it also displays a picture of the toy. The first auctions listed are the auctions that are ending first. Keep this in mind when looking at an item.

Reading the Description:
Toy collectors and sellers use specific language to describe toys (see the section titled "Rating Toys"). Be aware that not all dealers use the same rating system. Be very careful when reading a description. If you have any questions about the toy, email the seller and make sure your questions are answered. Look at the photos carefully and check the listing for what pieces are included. Sometimes sellers are not always aware of all the little parts that can go with a toy. Never assume a toy is complete unless it is so stated. Normally, the description should be clear and to the point. If an item has a crack, that should be stated. If an item needs some tender loving care (TLC), then that should also be stated. You can also refer to the glossary.

Placing a bid:
Determine how much you are willing to pay for an item. Consider all of the factors of an item, such as condition, and its value. Price guides are useful, but become outdated very quickly. Another way to determine value is to do a search of completed auctions to see what the toy has sold for in the past. Be careful though, and make sure items are of comparable condition. Also remember transportation costs. The buyer of an item is usually responsible for these. Place your bid for the highest amount you want to pay for the item. eBay™ will automatically bid for you up to your highest amount stated.

NOTE: It is advisable to check the feedback rating of anyone offering an item for auction BEFORE you bid. You can do this by clicking on the number next to the user's name. The comments available here from past customers and sellers may influence your transaction.

Completing the transaction:
eBay™ will notify both the high bidder and the seller of the auction results. The seller will then email the winner about where to send the payment. After receipt of the item, if you are pleased with the transaction, please leave feedback about the person as a courtesy. Many will do the same for you.
