Starting Your Collection

By John Buonaguidi & George Keniston

If you’re one of those people who really enjoys the wonderful world of sports, then you may be a likely candidate to begin the fun of collecting sports memorabilia. But be forewarned... it can be as addictive as having that first taste of chocolate — you just have to have more!

Sports memorabilia collecting is a broad field. The first thing that a new collector should think about is what specific area of sports to focus on. For example, if you have a favourite team or player, you might want to concentrate on collecting memorabilia pertaining to that team or player exclusively. Or, you may decide to focus on a particular aspect of the sports memorabilia field, such as sports photographs or sport books. The key is to select whatever appeals to you the most.

To begin, take a look at the next section, A Brief History of sports Memorabilia Collecting, for some background information on the sports memorabilia collecting field.
