Why People Collect Pottery By Tina Howard and Paul Howard What is it about pottery or porcelain that captures our hearts? The reasons are as varied as the category itself. Some people may love primitive pottery because of the untrained artistry, others may want to expand a china pattern that has been in their family for many years, and yet others may seek items produced in a particular area. Pottery's appeal is due, in large part, to the melding of art with function. The usefulness (or at least potential usefulness) of a pitcher designed by an artist, or a bowl adorned with cherubs and roses, brings elegance and opulence into our everyday lives. We enjoy our meals more if we love the dishes they are served on. Whether we want to decorate our homes with sculpture, fine art, folksy knick-knacks, or ancient relics, there is a type of pottery to meet the demand. |
