eBay Australia: Dolls

Displaying Your Collection

The following information is provided to educate and inform. eBay™ is not liable or responsible for any type of damage or loss caused, or alleged to be caused, directly or indirectly, by the information below.

Dolls are quite fragile, so you need to use care when displaying them. In general, dolls should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, excessive moisture, dirt, and cigarette smoke. Fluorescent lights can severely fade dolls and their features. Mothballs can emit a gas that can damage many dolls. Keep them away from radiators or air conditioners. Displaying your dolls behind glass may be the best way to protect them, if you can bear to do so.

Dolls made from different materials have different needs, and specific materials have particular weaknesses.

  • Celluloid dolls need to be kept away from heat. Do not keep them sealed in a case or they might burst into flames.
  • Cloth dolls should be displayed away from sunlight, with mothballs nearby.
  • Composition dolls should be displayed in places without extreme temperature changes.
  • Hard plastic dolls should be kept away from direct sunlight. Heat can warp the doll.
  • Porcelain (bisque or china) dolls should be shielded from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
  • Vinyl dolls are susceptible to extreme room temperatures. Keep them away from heaters and air conditioners. Sunlight and fluorescent light can be damaging. Tightly sealed cases can cause condensation to form and damage the dolls.
  • Wooden dolls are easily damaged by humidity and insects.
  • Wax dolls should never be displayed in direct sunlight or near heat.
