eBay Australia: Antiques

Displaying Your Collection

The following information is provided to educate and inform. eBay™ is not liable or responsible for any type of damage or loss caused, or alleged to be caused, directly or indirectly, by the information below.

Most antiques are very fragile, so you need to use care when displaying and storing them. In general, keep antiques away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, excessive moisture, dirt, and anything else that corrodes most items. Fluorescent lights can severely fade many antiques and their features. Also, keep them away from radiators and air conditioners.

Antiques are made from different materials and therefore have different needs. Each material has its own weaknesses. Research the specifics of storing your antiques on an item-by-item basis until you understand the care required for your antiques. Here is some general information that applies to many antiques:

  • Display textiles and clothing away from sunlight, with mothballs nearby.
  • Keep paper collectibles away from light and in a low and constant temperature.
  • Keep metals away from extreme heat.
  • Keep wood away from moisture/humidity and out of the sun for extended periods of time.
  • Keep ceramics shielded from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
