Slot car racing has been around for more than 40 years. It consists of racing model cars with electric motors around a wooden or plastic track. Although slot car tracks can be of almost any design, the most popular tends to be long ovals with a handful of switchbacks.

Along the centre of each lane is a deep groove called a slot. The slot car’s engine gets power from electric lines on either side of the slot.

Slot cars are made of a body, engine, gears, tires, shocks, and often magnets. The magnets apply a downward pressure to help in cornering, but too many magnets means you can sacrifice performance or burn out your motor.

Slot cars are only held in the slot by gravity (and possibly a light magnet), so if you go too fast your car can “de-slot,” which means you’ll lose power.

Slot car racing strategy revolves around going as fast as possible on the straightaways, but then slowing down in the corners to prevent yourself from de-slotting. It is legal to “bump” the car in the next lane when cornering in hopes of de-slotting your opponent. Although many beginners try this tactic, and it does sometimes work, most experts think focusing on your own race and getting into a rhythm are much more better long-term tactics for success.

Learn Slot Car Scales & Manufacturers

Learn Slot Car Scales & Manufacturers

Scale determines the size of your slot cars and slot car track. The most popular slot cars scales include: 1/64, 1/32, and 1/24.

  • 1/64 scale or HO slot cars: 1/64 scale or HO slot cars, are the smallest size, making them a great companion for model trains. The 1/64 scale size is generally less expensive and allows you to have a larger track with the same amount of space.

  • 1/32 scale slot cars: 1/32 scale slot cars are the most common available. You will find the widest selection of ready-to-go cars in this scale, and a great range of 1/32 slot car tracks and accessories.

  • 1/24 scale slot cars: 1/24 scale slot cars are the largest size slot cars available, which means you'll need more room for tracks. These cars have amazing detail and can be customised easily.

Some of the most popular slot car brands available include: Scalextric slot cars, Tomy Aurora AFX slot cars, Ninco slot cars, Artin slot cars, Carrera slot cars, and Fly slot cars .

  • Artin slot cars: Artin slot cars and tracks are among the most affordable today and are a great choice for beginners, as the cars are durable, and the tracks are made of hard plastic. They are upgradeable too, so if you find that you like the hobby, they can grow with you.

  • Carrera slot cars: Carrera makes the only slot car tracks in 1/24 scale. Although these large plastic tracks provide an excellent racing surface, the large scale will take up more space than a 1/32 scale track.

  • Fly slot cars: Fly slot cars are higher-end slot cars, available in both 1/32 scale and 1/24 scale.

  • Ninco slot cars: Ninco slot car tracks are wide, flexible and the transformers provide ample power. Ninco also makes some of the most detailed slot cars in the business.

  • Scalextric slot cars: Scalextric has a thinner 1/32 scale slot car track. It is made of a flexible plastic and offers a wide range of specialty slot car tracks.

  • Tomy Aurora AFX slot cars: Tomy Aurora AFX slot cars are very popular in Australia and you'll find a quality range of HO slot cars, tracks and accessories made by this manufacturer on eBay Australia.

Race and Collect Slot Cars

Race and Collect Slot Cars

Getting started in slot car racing is very easy. Many major manufacturers offer slot car sets that include everything you need to build your own track. Whether you are searching for modern slot cars (1970-now), vintage slot cars (pre-1970), or slot car accessories, you’ll find everything you need on eBay Australia to stay on track.

Get essential slot car gear

Everything from cars, to track, to transformers, to controllers, and any other accessories can come prepackaged in a beginner’s slot car set. Sets vary from simple two-lane setups to grand four-lane tracks with crisscrosses.

The main thing to decide when getting started is how much you’re willing to spend and how much room you have. Whichever set you purchase, it is recommended that it has at least one 1.8metre straightaway. This lets you really get the slot cars up to speed and makes you carefully judge when you’re going to need to let off the throttle to safely make the turn.

Collect vintage slot cars

Slot car racing has been around since the ‘60s and many of the people who enjoyed it then are re-discovering slot cars all over again.

The earliest cars were home-made from electric train parts, and the bodies were often carved from wood. Vintage slot cars come in the same scales as modern slot cars: 1/64, 1/32, and 1/24. That means many can be raced on comparable tracks today.

As technology hasn't really changed that much since the ‘60s, the great thing is that a tuned-out vintage slot car can still race along with some of the newest ones available today.

Explore slot car accessories

Once you come up to speed, there’s a range of slot car accessories to choose from. You’ll find a great variety to choose from on eBay Australia that will help you create the ultimate raceway.
