Collect Music Memorabilia

Collect Music Memorabilia

As with any collection, you’ll probably want to start by picking a theme to focus on for your music memorabilia. You can do this by item type, such as singling out only music posters or badges. Also, consider collecting by music genre, such as rock, pop, blues, or jazz.

You can narrow your focus even further by collecting from a single artist, like John Farnham, or Kylie Minogue, or collecting from a music group like Green Day, Coldplay or AC/DC. This can span different time periods, and even different types of entertainment, from music to film (for example, if your favourite artist is also an actor). Finally, consider collecting according to an era, such as music memorabilia from the 1960s or so on.

Remember to consider how much you are willing to pay and how many items you would like to have when building a collection, as music memorabilia vary greatly in value. For example, some personal items and instruments associated with musical icons like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, ABBA and Elvis are considered the cream of the crop for rock and pop collectables, and may sell for more than other related items in the same genre.

Finally, whether you are displaying your music memorabilia in a special display cabinet or storing them, make sure you take the right steps to protect them from light, temperature, humidity, acidity, and even the potential for pests. These can all adversely affect certain pieces and reduce their long-term value.

Research Music Memorabilia

Research Music Memorabilia

Some collectors of music memorabilia prefer to purchase items that have been authenticated. Proof of authenticity can take various forms, such as:

  • Photographs: Still photographs of individuals wearing a certain item or signing a certain item.

  • Testimonials: The personal word of someone associated with the band.

  • Certificates of authenticity: Certificate of authenticity (COA) from the studio or seller that was issued by an authenticator with industry credibility, or an entity that has a proven track record of experience and integrity.

Check the item listing for photos and other important details, such as the provenance of the item (which should includes information such as how, when, and where the item was obtained).
