Discover LEGO History
| |
Discover LEGO HistoryThe name LEGO comes from the words “leg godt”, which means "play well" in Danish. First started in Denmark as a carpenter shop in 1932, it wasn’t until 1949 that they introduced the “Automatic Binding Brick,” the predecessor to today’s LEGO. The rest, as they say, is history. 1954: LEGO “Automatic Binding Brick” is renamed the “LEGO Mursten” or “LEGO Brick” and is officially trademarked. The familiar stud and tube coupling system was designed to make the toys more stable after an initial lack of interest at a German toy fair. 1955: After further redevelopment of the LEGO bricks, LEGO System of Play is launched. 1959: LEGO starts to expand across Europe and offices in Belgium, Britain, France and Sweden are opened. 1961: LEGO makes a distribution deal with Samsonite Corp to start selling in the U.S and Canada. The range includes 50 sets, 15 vehicles, as well as numerous loose kits. 1964: Building sets with instructions are sold for the first time. 1966: 57 sets and 25 vehicles are available for sale by the end of the year. 1973: LEGO USA is established. 1977: LEGO TECHNIC line is introduced. 1978: Mini-figures with movable arms and legs are introduced to the LEGO worlds. 1980: A survey shows that 70% of all Western families with children under 14 have LEGO toys in the household. A large number of product lines are developed over the next 10 years. These include LEGO Castle and LEGO Pirates. 1990: The LEGO Group is now one of the 10 largest toy manufacturers in the world. 1999: LEGOLAND opens in Carlsbad, California. A new line of construction sets based on the extremely popular Star Wars movies is launched. LEGO brick is named one of the products of the century by Fortune magazine. 2001:
Bionicle is launched with huge success and even spawns a movie. LEGO also introduced Mindstorms, building kits that come with microprocessors thus making them truly robotic toys. 2001-2005: LEGO continues to release many lines based on popular movies, books, and television series.
