Check Baby Product and Toy Safety Information

It is prudent when buying items for your baby or child to ensure that the product meets current safety standards. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has published safety information about baby products that you can read for important safety advice. Before buying, check if the product you are intending to purchase is on the ACCC ban list or recalled items list.

Choose Educational Toys for Your Child

Choose Educational Toys for Your Child

It's important to match educational toys to your child’s age and stage of development. Many of these age-appropriate toys are available from LeapFrogFisher-Price, VTech, and other favourite brands. Whatever your child's age, all kids can reap the benefits of educational play.

Remember: Safety first! Before allowing your child to play with any toy, thoroughly read all the information about safe use and appropriate age levels, and check that the toy is recommended for children the size of your child.

Baby toys (0-12 months)

During your baby’s first few months, plush toys, mobiles, music boxes, and mirrors encourage early stages of perception. Buy a play mat or activity gym, with bright graphics and interesting features to keep your little one engaged until he or she is crawling.

Once babies are able to sit up and use their hands, they can learn with building blocks, stacking toys and baby books. The LittleTouch LeapPad Learning System brings storybooks to life and is great for introducing infants to numbers, colours, ABCs and other early development skills.

Toys for toddlers (12 months to 2 years)

Toddlers love to make the most of crayons, Play-Doh, and musical toys, which encourage dancing. Puzzles with big pieces invite investigation, while LEGO Duplo and other construction toys provide great hands-on experience with basic math concepts, helping kids fine-tune their motor skills.

Toys for preschool and kindergarten kids (3 to 5 years)

Get your kids acquainted with science and nature, and buy them pretend-play props such as kid-sized cameras, telephones and binocularsClimbing gyms, playhouses and dollhouses are also age-appropriate ways to promote your child's early social skills.

Bolster your child's early school learning! Many kids love educational games which are combined with technological gadgets, like Leapfrog My First Leappad Systems, Barbie laptops and other battery operated toys. The V.Smile TV Learning System is packed with educational video games that makes lessons exciting for the kids. Or get started with the Leapster L-Max Learning Game System, which can be adapted to fit your child’s skill level. Select from a library of interactive, action-packed games based on popular stories that cover preschool through to fourth-grade subject areas.

Toys for older children (6 to 12 years)

Choose more complex toys to reinforce children's reading, writing, and arithmetic skills. Consider a LeapPad Plus Writing Learning System, which adds a writing mode to the original platform. A teaching toy cash register, spelling games, and other electronic quizzing games are also ideal for incorporating math and verbal skills into playtime.

Primary school children can fine-tune their motor skills by working on model airplanes , or discover the fun side of science with chemistry sets, or discover numbers with wall hangers and math games.

Select Toys for Kids With Special Needs

Select Toys for Kids With Special Needs

Kids with special needs reach particular stages of learning that are reflected in how they play with their toys: exploration (examination of the toy through touch, sight, and sound), discovery (realisation of the toy’s uses), and interaction (creative and imaginative use of the toy).

While some toys are designed or modified for special-needs children, specialised toys aren't always necessary. There are several toys that have multiple uses and special-needs children learn through the process of playing. Consult with your paediatrician or education specialist about your child's specific needs, and keep a few features in mind when selecting toys.

  • Search for simply designed, realistically configured toys for the learning-impaired child. Ordinary toys with lots of labels and easy-to-understand illustrations, may be useful. Toys that encourage children to act out real life situations may also be helpful, including pretend play toys, and action figures and dolls.

  • Look for audible, interactive toys for the speech-impaired child. For example, Neurosmith music blocks allow kids to experiment with different shapes, colours, and sounds while also encouraging their motor skills.

  • Find high-pitched, visually interesting, volume-controlled toys for the hearing-impaired child. Fisher-Price activity tables are highly visual toys, sometimes with musical elements, which let kids get creative with stacking and building exercises.

  • Get magnified, tactile, mirrored toys for the sight-impaired child. Consider toys that provide sounds, interesting textures or surfaces. Also, consider realistic pretend-play toys like the Little People Beeps the Bus from Fisher-Price.
