Learn About Camera Filters

Learn About Camera Filters

Camera filters are a simple way to exercise more control over your shots. Simply by placing a filter in front of your lens you can achieve a variety of effects. Popular applications for the filter include:

  • Lens protection: Filters are commonly used to protect the camera lens. Replacing a damaged camera lens filter is relatively inexpensive, whereas, replacing a damaged camera lens is expensive.

  • Colour correction: Modify the colours of your exposure with colour filters.

  • Special effects: Many filters apply a special effect to your shots, such as creating a soft focus for portraits.

Select a Camera Filter

Select a Camera Filter

You will find a tremendous range of camera filter types as you shop on eBay Australia. Consider your budget, intended applications and lenses as you search.

  • UV, haze and protection filters: UV, haze and protection filters are effectively lens insurance. These filters are left in place at all times to protect the lens from moisture, scratches and dust, while filtering out quality weakening factors like ultraviolet rays.

  • Polarising filters: To reduce reactions from the sun and other polarised light sources use polarising filters. Make sure you choose the type appropriate for your camera. Manual focus cameras call for linear polarising filters, whereas circular polarising filters suit an autofocus camera.

  • Enhancing and colour correction filters: Enhancing and colour correction filters permit more light of a specific colour to pass through to the film. For instance, a yellow filter (popularly chosen by photographers shooting in black and white) increases the yellow light, while reducing the rest of the spectrum, which increases the contrast between sky and colour. Each filter is colour-specific to give you control over what colours are enhanced and reduced. The most popular are yellow filters, red filters, green filters and orange filters.

  • Digital camera filters: Most digital cameras feature controls which may deliver a similar effect or correction to that of a filter. You also have the ability to add effects and perform corrections post-production with digital-imaging software. Still you may want to use digital camera filters for special effects, polarising or simply to protect a valuable lens.

  • Colour conversion filters: Colour conversion filters, or colour temperature filters, produce cooling and warming effects with colour film. Use blue filters to cool and pale yellow to warm photos.

  • Special effects filters :  Use these filters to produce special effects. Filters include diffusion filters, soft focus filters and starburst filters.

  • Skylights: Skylights absorb the ultraviolet rays that can weaken the quality of your outdoor photographs.

  • Infrared filters: Infrared filters have traditionally been used for surveillance and science applications as they transmit light that is only detected with UV film.

  • Neutral density filters: If you plan to shoot long exposures in the daylight, particularly of bright scenes like sand and snow, get a neutral density filter.

Manufacturing camera filters

Camera filters can be manufactured in different ways. They may be laminated, sandwiched or made of coloured resin or glass.

  • Laminated: The filtration is laminated onto a piece of resin or glass.

  • Sandwiched: The filtration is sandwiched between two pieces of glass or resin. Polarising filters are made with this technique.

  • Glass: The filtration material is mixed into molten glass or resin. The finished product can be cut into extremely thin filters.

Attach Your Camera Filters

Attach Your Camera Filters

Purchase camera filters that will meet your specific photographic needs or save money by purchasing a kit or set. Either way, you have a number of options for attaching your filters to your camera or lens.

  • Screw-on filters: The easiest, and most common, way to attach or mount a camera filter is to screw a ring-shaped filter onto the lens. Determine which size you need as these filters come in a wide variety to match the diameter of the lens.

  • Drop-in filters: Some long telephoto lenses with a wide diameter (300 mm or above) include a convenient drop-in system, that is a small compartment near the rear of the lens to house a drop-in filter.

  • Modular filter systems: A modular filter system will provide a degree of flexibility if you have many lenses of different sizes. Use of the modular system means that a filter holder will need to be mounted to the front of your lens. Though most often square, modular filter systems are available in several sizes and shapes so determine your camera type and needs before you buy.

  • Filter ring adapters: A filter ring adapter gives you flexibilty in that it allows you to fit a non-compatible filter to a specific size lens. These are often called stepping rings, because a step-down ring allows you to use a smaller filter than your lens size and vice versa for step-up. Note that size designations are always lens first, then filter.
